TRAILER - ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES (1959)

Why are the good swamp folk of the Florida Everglades suddenly disappearing? Could it be that there are a pack of giant mutated leeches on the loose in the swamps? Yup, seems so!

God awful Roger Corman produced monster movie infamous for featuring Playboy Playmate, Yvette Vickers, as one of the leads. The monsters of the title are played by actors in black plastic sacks covered with rubber suckers! A must for fans of trashy bad cinema.

Classic Shootout - ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968)

TRAILER - Q: THE WINGED SERPENT (1982)

Larry Cohen is a grindhouse legend. BLACK CEASER, HELL UP IN HARLEM, IT'S ALIVE, and the list goes on. Cohen's contribution to the world of exploitation is considerable. I never would have thought though that he could have made an effective tribute to Ray Harryhausen, but he did. Q is a crazy film that is part monster film, part crime, part action, but 100% stop-motion. BLACK CEASER is my favorite Cohen film, but Q is right up there.

You'll just have time to scream... before it tears you apart!

TRAILER - ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968)

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST was the last great Leone western, DUCK YOU SUCKER is flawed but still good. WEST is a stunning achievement and written by a trifecta of Italian cool: Leone, Dario Argento, and Bernardo Bertolucci. The story is about a stranger with a harmonica who joins forces with a desperado to protect a widow from an assassin working for the railroad. This is a long film, but it's worth ever minute of it's nearly three hour running time.

There were three men in her life. One to take her... one to love her... and one to kill her.

See you on forty deuce,

TRAILER - THE CAT O'NINE TAILS (1971)

THE CAT O'NINE TAILS was only Dario Argento's second film and the one that earned him the nickname "the Italian Hitchcock." Though I am a bigger fan of his first film, THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, TAILS is still an incredibly effective film that has one of the better finales in Argento's impressive catalog.

Caught between the truth and a murderer's hand!

THE NEW RELEASE WALL FOR 5/31

It’s Tuesday, and that means sites and stores will be full of new goodness to tickle your eyeballs with. So sit-back, relax, and take a look at what’s good enough to stick in the movie playing machine.

Not a whole lot is dropping today but there are THREE huge release that have to be picked up. We had a tough time singling out just one so we had to do a menage-a-trois.

The first Release of the Week is Sergio Leone's epic and operatic masterpiece ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. This was the last great Leone western, DUCK YOU SUCKER is flawed but still good. WEST however is a stunning achievement and written by a trifecta of Italian cool: Leone, Dario Argento, and Bernardo Bertolucci. The story is about a stranger with a harmonica who joins forces with a desperado to protect a widow from an assassin working for the railroad. This is a long film, but it's worth ever minute of it's nearly three hour running time.

This has some great extras including John Carpenter laying down some commentary:

Commentary with Contributions from Directors John Carpenter, John Milius & Alex Cox, Film Historians Sir Christopher Frayling & Dr. Sheldon Hall and Cast & Crew
An Opera of Violence
The Wages of Sin
Something to do with Death
Railroad: Revolutionising The West

Easter Egg – New Trailer

Pick this one up from TLA Cult here: http://bit.ly/mQzxEI

The next Release of the Week is Dario Argento's THE CAT O' NINE TAILS which finally makes it's way to Blu-ray. This was only Argento's second film and the one that earned him the nickname "the Italian Hitchcock." Though I am a bigger fan of his first film, THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, TAILS is still an incredibly effective film that has one of the better finales in Argento's impressive catalog.

The extras aren't great on this set but this is what you get:

"Tales Of The Cat" - Interviews with Writer/Director Dario Argento, Co-Writer Dardano Sacchetti, and Composer Ennio Morricone
Theatrical Trailers
TV Spots
Radio Spots
Radio Interviews with Stars James Franciscus and Karl Malden

Grab this from TLA Cult here: http://bit.ly/jshXQj

Our last Release of the Week is BRUTE CORPS. This is a grindhouse classic and on any other week, this would be at the top of our list, but you just don't put much ahead of Argento or Leone. This is a brutal flick about A couple that runs into a Marine camp where soldiers are perform training exercises. The girl gets tormented, and the guy goes after them and all kinds of fucked-up shit goes down.

No special features are listed on this bad boy.

Grab this from TLA Cult here: http://bit.ly/kmTJNm

I am not a huge fan of this film or it's two sequels. I think it is a little too socially aware and not written very well but it has it's fans so...here it is.

You can pick this one up from Amazon here: http://amzn.to/kp7brB

This was written as an ode to exploitation. I haven't seen it yet, but I am curious. This was trashed by critics and fans of B-cinema but I am still going to check this out.

You can grab this from TLA Cult here: http://bit.ly/jojyRH

This is not a great film but it's still one that I watch at least once a year. It's way too overloaded but the stuff with Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness and Mia Sara's Princess Lilly is really well done. In other news, the name Princess Lilly will never be used on this site again.

Grab this from TLA Cult here: http://bit.ly/kVFsAp

The Lucas leg hump to the 50's is out in Blu.

Last but not least, this is a massive Blu-ray set of Kubrick goodness. Some of these titles have been available individually for a while but for those that didn't grab those, now is your chance. This is packed with awesome extras but at over $100 this will take your wallet, run it over with a truck, and cause it spontaneously combust.

You can grab this from Amazon here: http://amzn.to/j3lzO2

That's it for this week kids. Next week we have all kinds of cool with the BOB HOSKINS COLLECTION, EXCORCISMUS, GIRLS-GUNS-AND G STRINGS: THE ANDY SIDARIS COLLECTION, RUBBER, and Severin Films STUNT MAN Blu-ray release.

Until then...

Here's to good watching, salute!

TRAILER - THE DIRTY DOZEN (1967)

When it comes to "men on a mission" films, WHERE EAGLES DARE holds the second spot in the top 10. The first spot is THE DIRTY DOZEN, this is an epic film with one of the best casts around: Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, George Kennedy, John Cassavetes, Ernest Borgnine, and more. Get ready for some good ol'Nazi killing.

Train them! Excite them! Arm them!...Then turn them loose on the Nazis!

See you on forty deuce,
G

TRAILER - THE GREAT ESCAPE (1963)

The Great Escape is based on the true story of a group of Allied prisoners of war who managed to escape from an impenetrable Nazi prison camp during World War II. This film is 166 minutes and goes from the jump to the end credits slamming you with action, humor, suspense, and healthy dose of Steve McQueen turning in a perfect tough guy performance.

From a barbed-wire camp to a barbed-wire country, they made...THE GREAT ESCAPE!

See you on forty deuce,

TRAILER - FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE (1978)

Is this as good as GUNS OF NAVARONE? Nope. It still packs a mean punch though and has a cast out of geek central: Harrison Ford, Carl Weathers, Franco Nero, and Robert Shaw. This was directed by Guy Hamilton who was best known then and now as the director of several Bond films, including GOLDFINGER. GUNS is a better film than NAVARONE, but I have to admit, I play NAVARONE more often.

The Odds Against Them Were 10,000 to 1...But What the Hell!

See you on forty deuce,
G

TRAILER - THE GUNS OF NAVARONE (1961)

This is still one of the best WW2 adventure films ever made. An all-star cast that slip naturally into their roles and amazing story equal a film that kicks an enormous amount of ass. J. Lee Thompson knew how to handle multiple genres, he did CAPE FEAR just before GUNS, but he was most at home in an action film. Gregory Peck said there were only four directors he could trust to tell him whether or not he was giving a good performance: Alfred Hitchcock, George Cukor, William Wyler and Thompson.

An impregnable fortress... An invincible army... and the unstoppable commando team.

See you on forty deuce.
G

TRAILER - RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II (1985)

RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PT II is my favorite in the Rambo franchise. The first film is kind of an action-adventure but PTII is full on action that turns into a pissed off revenge tale. George P. Cosmatos does a great job (and would later do COBRA and TOMBSTONE) but the film is shot by Jack Cardiff and looks amazing. Usually I would say hit this one on VHS but PTII demands Blu-ray.

What most people call hell, he calls home.

See you on forty deuce,
G

TRAILER - FIRST BLOOD (1982)

When it comes to the vet-comes-home genre, I am more of a ROLLING THUNDER guy than a FIRST BLOOD guy but still, this film is very tough. I think the ending is a little weak considering the build-up towards the finale but that is a minor complaint.

This time he's fighting for his life.

TRAILER - MISSING IN ACTION (1984)

A VHS classic that more than borrowed from the plot-line of RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II (which had an original outline by James Cameron). This film was shot back to back with MIA 2 and has all kinds of Norris ass-kickery on display.

The war's not over until the last man comes home.

See you on forty deuce,
G

TRAILER - SHOCK WAVES (1977)

The Zombies in this film are some of the best in the genre, their approach to land and the slow rise from the ocean is a classic image in horror. This is Peter Cushing doing what he does best...being creepy as fuck as the SS Commander of the Nazi-Zombies.

From the depths of Hell's Ocean come the Zombies of the SS!

See you on forty deuce,
G

TRAILER - INGLORIOUS BASTARDS (1978)

If you're a kraut, he'll take you out!

One of the best titles for film in motion picture history. In fact, Tarantino purchased the rights to the film just to be able to use it. From a story standpoint the two films have nothing to do with each other, but they are both tough, gritty, and full of Nazi killing.

Whatever the Dirty Dozen did, they did it dirtier!

TRAILER - NIGHTBREED (1990)

The films of Clive Barker seem to be consistently and criminally underrated. Whether he is Directing (only 3 feature films with a forth on the way) or writing (29 titles), they never reach the respect they deserve. Based off his novella Cabal, NIGHTBREED is a story of outcasts and mutants. This film is much more complex that its plot outline suggests. Barker was not happy with the final cut and has talked about a directors-cut for so long I am not sure it will ever be released, hope I am wrong though.

Lori thought she knew everything about her boyfriend... Lori was wrong!

Siskel & Ebert Classic Review: FULL METAL JACKET (1987)

Siskel & Ebert was on channel 2 at 11:35 pm every Sunday. Here is our weekly tribute to the two legends. Film school starts now.

G's Take: This was Kubrick's first film after a seven year hiatus and I think there is some rust on display here. The first half of the film, arguably, is some of Kubrick's best work as we follow new recruits through basic training. FULL METAL JACKET is more about breaking down ordinary people and re-building them into machines of war than it is about the Vietnam conflict. The story doesn't sustain itself though for the entire film, the last half feels flat and lacks authenticity and it has nothing to do with being shot in England, it has to do with the action which is served up in a display of stereotypical war film scenarios.

"Routine" is not a word that comes close to describing the films of Kubrick, but it defines the last half of FULL METAL JACKET. THUMBS UP, but Kubrick has done better. An uneven Kubrick film though is still better than some directors best efforts.

TRAILER - THE DOLL SQUAD (1973)

Not the psychoholic slag of THE ASTRO ZOMBIES and not packed full of crazy like THE CORPSE GRINDERS, but this is packed full of hotness with a cast that includes Tura Satana. Buckle up for another Ted V. Mikels classic.

Six female assassins - with orders to... SEDUCE AND DESTROY!

TRAILER - KILLING SPREE (1987)

Tim Ritter has been pounding out indie horror since the mid 80's and KILLING SPREE is hands down my favorite film of his. KILLING SPREE stars Asbestos Felt (best. name. ever.), a jealous husband who convinces himself that his wife is cheating on him. Russo then begins to kill each man he suspects has entered Mrs. Russo's playground. Gruesome and creative kills await. Do yourself a favor and grab this one on VHS.

He will dance on your grave!

TRAILER - THE POM POM GIRLS (1976)

This is a grindhouse classic and a favorite of Tarantino's. If American Graffiti and Porky's knocked boots, the offspring would be The Pom Pom Girls. Dig it.

It was their senior year... the last chance to raise hell!

See you on forty deuce,

TRAILER - BLOOD MANIA (1970)

Like Peter Carpenter's other film he wrote and produced, POINT OF TERROR, the trailer to BLOOD MANIA is better than the film. It still has it's moments...fleeting...rare...pointless moments.

See it - Feel it - Taste it - Once you have had it you will never be the same!

TRAILER - GODZILLA VS. THE BIONIC MONSTER (1974)

Godzilla battles a robot replica of himself in this typically loud Kaiju monster bash. The original title was quickly changed to GODZILLA VS. THE COSMIC MONSTER as the distributing company releasing the film in the US were threatened with law suits from Universal Studios for the title's similarity to their The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman series. Known today at GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA.

TRAILER - SHAFT'S BIG SCORE! (1972)

Sequel to the famous original finds detective John Shaft investigating the murder of an old friend, leaving behind him a trail of "cool" everywhere he goes. Director Gordon Parks thins out the story and amps up the action in this entertaining Blaxploitation classic. The chase finale is a highlight. Followed by SHAFT IN AFRICA (1973).

TRAILER - THE KEEP (1983)

Michael Mann's second feature film (after THIEF) is kind of a mixed bag but you get Nazi's getting all kinds of fucked up which always makes for good watching. Cast is awesome and includes: Scott Glenn, Gabriel Byrne, and Ian McKellen.

THEY WERE ALL DRAWN TO THE KEEP. The soldiers who brought death. The father and daughter fighting for life. The people who have always feared it. And the one man who knows its secret... THE KEEP. Tonight, they will all face the evil.

See you on forty deuce,

TRAILER - THE GIRL ON A MOTORCYCLE (1968)

Jack Cardiff was one of the greatest cinematographers in the history of cinema, but he also had chops as a director. DARK OF THE SUN is probably his best film, but GIRL ON A MOTORCYCLE, with Marianne Faithful and Alan Delon is a close second. A psychedelic classic.

She's always naked under leather!

See you on forty deuce,

TRAILER - THE HONEYMOON KILLERS (1969)

THE HONEYMOON KILLERS is based on the true story of Martha Beck and Ray Fernandez, dubbed the "Lonely Hearts Killers" in the the forties. This was directed by Leonard Kastle who replaced two other directors (one of which was Martin Scorsese). Though this was his first and last film, he created an amazing picture. Francois Truffaut called this his favorite American film of all-time. It is directed with a passion for the characters, they are never mocked or presented as anything other than what they are. This was shot by Oliver Wood (the Bourne films) in a grainy black and white which adds to the overall realism of the film, giving it a tough and pulpy feel.

Love is a bitch...called Martha.

TRAILER - BLUE THUNDER (1983)

BLUE THUNDER is a cool flick with tough performances by Roy Scheider and Daniel Stern, but Malcom McDowell steels the show in a crazy, over-the-top role as the villain. This has some great aerial shots and a torture scene that will make you wince. WARGAMES was released the same year, not a bad 12 months for director John Badham.

The Skies Will Never Be the Same!

See you on forty deuce,

TRAILER - JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS (1963)

Classic fantasy about Jason and his quest for the golden fleece remains one of the greatest of all adventure films, highlighted by effects wizard Ray Harryhausen's eye popping stop motion animation. Arguably his finest hour. Too many highlights to mention here, though it's hard to top the climatic skeleton battle for sheer spectacle. A winner all the way.

Zevk,

TRAILER - OLD DRACULA (1975)

A film spoof gone wrong is sometimes better than when goes right. This film misses the mark but is so off, it is kind of brilliant. A crazy plot that follows a faulty blood transfusion turns Drac's wife black. Awesome trailer though with Wolfman Jack doing the voice-over. He sounds like he is gurgling glass followed by a shot of rye.

Classic Fight Scene - JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS (1963)

TRAILER - NIGHT MOVES (1975)

Gritty modern noir with the 70s touch is one of Gene Hackman's most overlooked films. Hackman plays Harry Moseby, a retired professional football player turned private eye who gets sucked into a wild case set in the Florida Keys. Hackman's usual intensity earned him a nomination for the BAFTA Award. Wild climax involving a sea plane is a highlight.

TRAILER - C.H.U.D. (1984)

Ugly. Slobbering. Ferocious. Carnivorous. This is a tough little horror film that was a Friday night staple for many years. The box in the video store had a raised cover with the hand coming out of the sewer, really wish I had permanently borrowed that.

A recent article in a New York newspaper reported that there were large colonies of people living under the city... The paper was incorrect. What is living under the city is not human. C.H.U.D. is under the city.

TRAILER - MALIBU EXPRESS (1985)

Packing Heat From Texas To Malibu Beach!

An Andy Sidaris classic with the great Sybil Danning as Contessa Luciana. This is kind of his take on a Dukes of Hazzard-ish plot, so you know it is ridiculous from the jump. Be honest though, you didn't get this for the plot.

TRAILER - LE MANS (1971)

Steve McQueen takes you for a drive in the country. The country is France. The drive is at 200 MPH!

LE MANS is Steve McQueen's most personal film. McQueen did all of his own driving in this with a broken foot in a cast no less. Many think he actually would have won this race had his car been a little better. This film has an almost documentary like approach to the cars and the speeds they reach. Hands down the best racing film of all time.

A double dose of 70's grindhouse sleaze. This must be purchased for the cover alone. I havetn seen HOW TO SCORE WITH GIRLS but THE WHITE RAT is 12 kinds of cool and stars Alisha Fontaine who wasn't a great actress but she didn't need to be, she just needed to be there.

No features mentioned on this set.

We haven't seen this one yet, but from TLA's description, sounds awesome!

Emanating sleaze out of its shameless pores, Eyes of the Chameleon features hordes of gratuitous nudity, a bunch of splatterific gore, hot chicks making out and a whole lot more sticky sordidness. This low budget exploitation horror flick follows a young woman as she goes insane while everyone around her is killed off by a ysterious slasher. Features a handful of women bound by a sadistic killer, a chick who gets her boob carved with a razor, a group sex scene that turns into a bloodbath and more.

Oliver Stones first film in his Vietnam trilogy is still to this day the best film he ever made, and its finally on Blu-ray. This is a truly haunting film about good and evil and how those lines are blurred in war. A great performance by Charlie Sheen, a remarkably villainous performance by Tom Berenger, and a moving performance by Willem Dafoe (who also has one of the greatest death scenes of all-time).

By all accounts, Criterion has done an amazing job with The Tramp's most controversial film. Though this film doesn't work for me as well as some of his others, the moment he lampoons Hitler is some of the best work he has ever done.

Here are the extras on the set:

New high-definition digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition

New audio commentary by Charlie Chaplin historians Dan Kamin and Hooman Mehran

The Tramp and the Dictator (2001), a documentary narrated by filmmaker Kenneth Branagh and featuring interviews with author Ray Bradbury, director Sidney Lumet, historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr., screenwriter Budd Schulberg, and a host of others

Two new visual essays, by Chaplin archivist Cecilia Cenciarelli and Chaplin biographer Jeffrey Vance

TRAILER - GODZILLA ON MONSTER ISLAND aka GODZILLA VS. GIGAN (1972)

Earth monsters Godzilla and Anguirus battle space monsters King Ghidorah and Gigan next to a giant Godzilla statue at a theme park. Did we mention that the statue can fire rays out of its eyes? Or that it's controlled by giant cockroach aliens from a planet in Space Hunter Nebula-M? Or that Godzilla and Anguirus can speak to one another in this one? TRAILER - THE STUNT MAN (1980)

Richard Rush's masterpiece. This film is brilliant from begining to end. Rush has made some classic grindhouse films including: THUNDER ALLEY, THE SAVAGE SEVEN, HELLS ANGELS ON WHEELS, and the underrated Alan Arkin and James Caan film FREEBIE AND THE BEAN, but Rush was never better than the work he did here. Plus, you get Peter O'Toole who just owns this film but I have always been a fan of Steve Railsback since ESCAPE 2000 (directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith), he has a really solid performance in this.

SEVERIN TO RELEASE DEFINITIVE EDITION OF ‘THE STUNT MAN’ ON BLU-RAY JUNE 7TH

Damn, I love starting off a Monday with an announcement that makes the geek nuts tingle in anticipation. Peter O'Toole owns this film but I have always been a fan of Steve Railsback since ESCAPE 2000 (directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith), he has a really solid performance in this. Severin Films, fresh off of SLEDGEHAMMER and BMX BANDITS earlier this year, are getting out some great titles.

SEVERIN TO RELEASE DEFINITIVE EDITION OF
‘THE STUNT MAN’ ON BLU-RAY JUNE 7TH

Oscar®-nominated cult classic features over 6 hours of Bonus Features
including feature-length documentary & exclusive new cast interviews

LOS ANGELES, CA, May 18th, 2011 – Severin Films today announced 6/7 release of their Blu-ray ‘Ultimate Edition’ of the three-time Oscar® nominated sensation THE STUNT MAN. The film, starring Peter O’Toole, Steve Railsback and Barbara Hershey, features an all-new HD transfer supervised by Academy Award® nominated producer/director/co-writer Richard Rush and more than 6 hours of Extras that include an all-star audio commentary with Rush, O’Toole, Railsback, Hershey, Alex Rocco, Sharon Farrell and legendary stunt coordinator Chuck Bail, new featurette interviews with O’Toole, Railsback and Hershey, Rush’s own revealing 2000 feature-length documentary THE SINISTER SAGA OF MAKING ‘THE STUNT MAN’, a new Rush career retrospective and more.

O’Toole stars in his still-iconic Oscar® nominated performance as director Eli Cross, a megalomaniacal madman commanding a film-set circus where a paranoid young veteran (Railsback) finds himself maybe replacing a dead stunt man, possibly falling for the beautiful leading lady (Hershey), and discovering that love, death and the mayhem of moviemaking can definitely be the wildest illusions of all.

One of the most acclaimed directors of the ‘70s with films like GETTING STRAIGHT and FREEBIE & THE BEAN, Richard Rush fought 9 years to get THE STUNT MAN made then spent another two years battling 20TH Century Fox to get it released. When the film finally reached screens, it was immediately hailed as one of the best of the year by such critics as Pauline Kael of The New Yorker, David Ansen of Newsweek and Richard Schickel of Time. The film went on to be nominated for six Golden Globe Awards, and Best Actor, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Awards®.

“THE STUNT MAN defied all odds to become the most unexpected and acclaimed cult hit of the ‘80s, and remains one of the most slyly subversive and thrillingly original action/comedy/drama motion pictures of all time,” says Carl Daft, CEO and co-founder of Severin Films. “We’re proud to bring this Ultimate Edition of one of our favorite Hollywood movies to its millions of loyal fans, as well as introduce it to a whole new audience for the first time.”

Severin Films, founded in 2006 with offices in Los Angeles and London, has been called “well on its way to becoming the greatest indie label of all time” by BlogCritics.org. Their DVD and Blu-ray releases include Alejandro Jodorowsky’s SANTA SANGRE, Jess Franco’s MACUMBA SEXUAL and BLOODY MOON, Walerian Borowczyk’s IMMORAL WOMEN, the unrated Director’s Cut of Just Jaeckin’s GWENDOLINE, Richard Stanley’s restored HARDWARE, Enzo Castellari’s original INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, Oscar®-nominee Patrice Leconte’s THE HAIRDRESSER’S HUSBAND, Don Sharp’s PSYCHOMANIA and Roman Polanski’s WHAT? Severin’s upcoming HD restorations include Ted Post’s THE BABY, Eugenio Martín’s HORROR EXPRESS and Peter Duffell’s THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD. The company’s theatrical releases include BIRDEMIC, DEVOLVED, and the forthcoming horror anthology THE THEATRE BIZARRE.

TRAILER - THE VAMPIRE'S NIGHT ORGY (1974)

A group of workers are stuck in the town of Tolnio after their bus breaks down. Soon, they find that they are trapped in a vampire village. If I had a dollar for every time I was stuck in a vampire village... This may be the late León Klimovsky's best film. Though he also directed WEREWOLF SHADOW and DR. JECKYLL VS. THE WEREWOLF, VAMPIRES NIGHT ORGY has some genuinely effective shots and a cool story (even if the twist is ruined by the title).

And for all you orgy fans out there...though this has some impressive amounts of skin, look elsewhere for your orgy thrills. You will find this lacking.

Welcome to the town of Tolnio, you are now...a victim!

TRAILER - PHASE IV (1974)

Creepy science fiction thriller about super intelligent ants and their war against scientists at a remote desert outpost is famous for being the only film directed by famous title designer Saul Bass. Though a bit dated, science fiction fans will dig the arresting visuals as Bass films the ants in a subtle documentary style and keeps the film's dialogue to a minimum. A forgotten gem worth finding.

Siskel and Ebert Classic Review: PREDATOR and PREDATOR 2

Siskel & Ebert was on channel 2 at 11:35 pm every Sunday. Here is our weekly tribute to the two legends. Film school starts now.

G's Take: Good ol'Siskel, once again he is on the wrong side of cinematic history. I love how he likes the Predator until the moment you can see him. PREDATOR is a sci-fi classic, one of the coolest films to come out of the 80's, and remains Arnold's best film after the first two Terminator pictures. Though it has moments of predictability and some stock characters, the story moves quick, has some amazing action and the Predator is a menacing bad-ass. THUMBS WAY, WAY UP!

Side Note: Who else thinks Arnold should ditch the Terminator films and come back to the Predator franchise? Dutch as a grizzled survivor of the jungle nightmare is now the golden goose for the Predators and a hunting party has landed on earth to find him. GRAN TORINO that franchise fools. Damn. I think I just drooled on my laptop.

G's Take: This is not a great film but I have a soft spot for the alien hunter. I dig seeing the Predator on the streets of Los Angeles but Glover doesn't work for me here, Gary Busy is terrible, but you do get Bill Paxton and Maria Conchita Alonso. For every spoonful of bad you get a shot of good which makes for a nice plate of mediocrity. Dig in. A marginal THUMBS UP.

TRAILER - MY TUTOR (1983)

George Bowers was known more for his editing (POM POM GIRLS, ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BONZAI, LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN, HARLEM NIGHTS) than his directing efforts. He only directed four feature films in addition to some limited TV work. At least he got in MY TUTOR, a VHS classic.

TRAILER - ALTERED STATES (1980)

Typical Ken Russell mind fuck about a Harvard scientist, William Hurt in his film debut, and the "changes" he experiences after taking hallucinatory drugs while meditating in an isolation chamber. Great late night flick for the counter culture crowd is basically an updating of Jack Arnold's MONSTER ON THE CAMPUS (1958), complete with state of the arts special effects to enhance the mind blowing. Drew Barrymore also makes her screen debut.

TRAILER - DEATH WISH 2 (1982)

Bronson is back on the streets, this time going after the LA street gang that murdered his daughter. Exploitative sequel to DEATH WISH (1974) isn't half as good as the original, but still worth catching if you're a Bronson fan and enjoy watching him mow down street scum. Director Michael Winner goes overboard with some of the brutality, particularly during an extended rape scene. By far the ugliest film in the series.

TRAILER - TRICK OR TREAT (1986)

Skippy from Family Ties plays a record backwards and begins to communicate with a dead rock star who teaches him the fine art of revenge in this VHS classic from '86. Gene Simmons as a rock DJ, Ozzy as a rock-hating preacher, and some grizzly kills. Everything a growing boy needs.

TRAILER - MAD MAX (1979)

Definition: FAST FILM - A film that upon conclusion adds twenty pounds of weight to your foot upon contact with the gas pedal. Example: MAD MAX.

Despite how many times I have viewed this post-apocalyptic tale, I remain confused on the genre to place it in. It’s not quite sci-fi, has some western elements, more than enough action. How about just straight badass? Done and done.

TRAILER - WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS (1966) and MONSTER ZERO (1965)

It's double the kaiju bashing fun when Godzilla and Rodan take on Ghidrah on an alien planet in MONSTER ZERO (1965) and the Gargantua brothers demonstrate their brotherly hate for each other in WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS. City smashing was never so fun.

TRAILER - ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981)

Having Kurt Russel in a film is cool, having Russel and Lee Van Cleef in a film together means you are in for a cinematic ass-kicking. This is a dark, gritty, and tough film that features one of the most iconic characters of all time. THE FOG started Carpenters legendary 80's run, but ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK was his first masterpiece from the decade followed the next year by THE THING (another masterpiece). The guy is a Geek God.

See you on forty deuce,

TRAILER - CRY OF THE BANSHEE (1970)

Vincent Price chews up the scenery as the evil Lord Whitman in this violent tale of witchcraft and black magic. Typical for films of this type, CRY OF THE BANSHEE is full of sadism and unpleasantness as Price puts a number of young women "to The Question" as he battles a coven of witches and their leader Oona; well played by Elisabeth Bergner. Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame created the opening credits!

TRAILER - STUNT ROCK (1980)

This one goes to 11. Your brain will melt from the sights and sounds of Brian Trenchard-Smith's masterpiece of stunt and rock fusion. The film follows legendary stuntman Grant Page (MAD MAX) who goes to Los Angeles to work on a television series. He uses his spare time to lend his expertise to a rock band's stage-show (naturally).

Honestly though, who gives a fuck about story when you have the majestic band Sorcery and their theatrical rock and roll teaming up with a bad-ass doing insane stunts. If you wanted to make the case for why Australian cinema kicks 12 kinds of ass, you only need two words: STUNT ROCK.

TRAILER - DJANGO STRIKES AGAIN (1987)

Django is out for revenge after his daughter is kidnapped. Though there were more than thirty films using the Django character, this is the only official sequel to the first film. STRIKES AGAIN doesn't come close to the perfection of Sergio Carbucci's masterpiece but it still packs a mean punch. Carbucci shares a writing credit with two others on this film though I am not sure what he contributed, he passed away three years later at the age of 63.

The machine gun is back...the coffin is back...DJANGO STRIKES AGAIN!

TRAILER - TRUCK TURNER (1974)

Yaphet Kotto is a mean looking dude and anytime he is in a flick, the film benefits. You add Isaac Hayes to the mix and Nichelle Nichols (Uhura from Star Trek) and you have some geek crack. This is a cool Blaxploitation film that was originally intended for Robert Mitchum. After Mitchum walked they lined up James Coburn but after he walked they went the urban route and we ended up with a classic. Dig it.

TRAILER - ALLIGATOR (1980)

A giant alligator is loose in the sewers of Chicago and it's up to troubled cop Robert Forster to stop it before it turns the Windy City into a human smorgasbord.

Incredibly fun monster movie was praised by critics for its solid acting and the satirical script penned by John Sayles. Like Sayle's PIRANHA (1978), ALLIGATOR provides solid thrills that coincide with the obvious "winks" at the audience. The story is actually based on city myths from the 1920s and 1930s about alligators living in the sewers of major cities after wealthy families would flush them down the toilet after they brought them home from vacations to Florida and the critters became too large to handle. What a shitty life they must have had.

TRAILER - THE TRIP (1967)

I know it's hard to buy Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper dropping acid but just go with it. This is a really odd film written by Jack Nicholson (one of six he authored) and directed by Roger Corman. As much as I love the King of the B's, he may not have been the best choice to take a hit off this script. Still, a unique film.

TRAILER - THE GETAWAY (1972)

Steve McQueen is tough as nails as Doc McCoy in Peckinpah's classic adaptation of Jim Thompson's pulp masterpiece "The Getaway." Though the novel gives the character a little more depth, and really expands on the Rudy character, this is a pretty faithful adaptation.

I have to be honest, if I had to pick BULLITT or THE GETAWAY, I would probably go with THE GETAWAY but it's damn close. This film is 12 kinds of cool with a finale that doesn't stop until the guns go click.

TRAILER - THE BIG DOLL HOUSE (1971)

Their bodies were caged, but not their desires. They would do anything for a man - or to him.

Directed by Jack Hill and starring such recognizable grindhouse stars as Sid Haig, Pam Grier, Judith Brown and Roberta Collins, THE BIG DOLL HOUSE was the first film to introduce many of the exploitative elements that became so prevalent in the WIP or Women in Prison flick. A jungle hell prison set in some unknown banana republic, scantily clad yet tough women prisoners, shower scenes, mud wresting, torture, the sadistic warden, action oriented escapes; it's all here. Though films like Jesus Franco's 99 WOMEN and Lee Frost's LOVE CAMP 7 (both 1969) helped kick the sub genre into gear, it was THE BIG DOLL HOUSE that took it to the level of high camp and inspired all of the WIP films that followed.

This was only the second film to be released by Roger Corman's New World Pictures. Within the next three years, the production company would release four more WIPs, but none were as wild as this initial entry. A true trash classic that ranks up there as one of the greats of grindhouse cinema.

Classic low-budget mockumentary was a huge hit at that drive-ins in 1972 and was amazingly the 7th highest grossing film of the year! Sequel to THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (1954) finds the Gillman on display in Florida's Ocean Harbor after he is captured and taken from his "black lagoon" in the Amazon. Naturally he isn't too fond of his new surroundings and soon breaks loose to go on a typical 1950s monster rampage. Jack Arnold directs with a firm hand and Clint Eastwood makes his screen debut as a lab technician in this solid monster movie from Universal. Like the first film, this was filmed in 3-D. Followed by THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US (1956).

TRAILER - FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980)

The one that started it all and for anyone who is remotely familiar with popular culture you know that the series went on and on and on and on and on......

TRAILER - GODZILLA VS. THE SEA MONSTER (1966)

Wild entry in the Godzilla series plays almost like a Bond film at times as the big guy takes on a group of terrorists and their giant pet lobster on a south seas island. The film was originally supposed to feature Toho's version of King Kong; thus the scene where Godzilla becomes infatuated with an island girl. Mothra also turns up towards the end. Remains one of the most entertaining films in the franchise.

TRAILER - GALAXINA (1980)

She's too good to be true...and too real to be otherwise!

Director William Sachs made films that were notoriously light and kind of silly (THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN), GALAXINA went out of it's way not to break that trend. Campy and goofy but still full of enough 80's cheese to be on the re-watch list.

This was one of Dorothy Stratten's last films before she was killed in a murder-suicide by her ex-husband who grew jealous when she started dating director Peter Bogdanovich.

TRAILER - OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN (1983)

Peter Weller's rat problem in his yuppie brownstone turns into a full scale Tom and Jerry war when the rodent turns out to be just a little smarter than your everyday, garbage munching shit eater.

Great little thriller still plays well thanks to an intelligent script and an amazing performance from Weller as the obsessed Bart Hughes.

Bart Hughes (as he is setting traps for his furry nemesis): "Watch and weep, you furry fucker."

TRAILER - SCREAMERS (1995)

I've said it before and I will say it again, had SCREAMERS been released back in the mid-80's with a quarter of the budget, it would be a classic today. This is smart sci-fi and Peter Weller once again delivers a solid performance. If there was one actor I could put into a Tarantino film, Peter Weller hands down.

The Last Scream You Hear Will Be Your Own.
