It’s Tuesday, and that means sites and stores will be full of new goodness to tickle your eyeballs with. So sit-back, relax, and take a look at what’s good enough to stick in the movie playing machine.
There’s a ton of cool stuff dropping this week from hugely epic to independent exploitation and horror, so let’s smash the pedal…
The Release of the Week is THE STUNT MAN from Severin Films. Severin is quickly becoming our favorite label. They take risks, care about the films they are releasing, and consistently put out a tremendous product, all of that equals a badass label that is here to stay. Severin has released Alejandro Jodorowsky’s SANTA SANGRE, Richard Stanley’s restored HARDWARE, Enzo Castellari’s original INGLORIOUS BASTARDS and others but THE STUNT MAN is their largest title yet.
This features an all-new HD transfer supervised by Academy Award® nominated producer/director/co-writer Richard Rush and more than 6 hours of Extras that include audio commentary with Rush, O’Toole, Railsback, Hershey, Alex Rocco, Sharon Farrell and legendary stunt coordinator Chuck Bail, new featurette interviews with O’Toole, Railsback and Hershey, Rush’s own revealing 2000 feature-length documentary THE SINISTER SAGA OF MAKING ‘THE STUNT MAN’, a new Rush career retrospective and more. Severin went full-tilt on this!

The John Williams score gives me chills. The first few notes, despite how many times I have seen the film, fill me with anticipation and instantly transport me back to childhood when SUPERMAN and SUPERMAN II played on an endless loop on HBO. SUPERMAN is a classic film, SUPERMAN II is my favorite just because of the darker story and MOTHER-FUCKING GENERAL ZOD who is one of the greatest villains of all-time. The Richard Donner cut is far superior to the Richard Lester cut, Donner’s is just more fluid. As for the other films…Meh.
This set is gigantic, here is the list of extras:

TRUE GRIT is a modern masterpiece and a remarkable achievement for the Coen brothers who continue to create some of the most brilliant films I have ever seen. BLOOD SIMPLE, FARGO, RAISING ARIZONA, BIG LEBOWSKI, MILLER'S CROSSING, etc. Any Director would be happy to have even one of those films but the Coen’s own them all. Outside of MILLER'S CROSSING, I think this is the first time they have taken on a particular genre and the result is epic.
More than once I muttered “what the fuck?” This is odd, quirky, and all kinds of dangerous. Never before have I thought about a telekinetic tire. Never before have I thought about a knock-down drag-out fight between Carrie and a goddamn tire … but now … now I want that to happen in the worst way.

The debut film from Anthony G. Sumner is a cool horror anthology that played on VOD last month and it is a pretty solid flick. It has blood by the gallons, the occasional disembowelment, and zombies. Everything a growing boy needs. Really anxious to see what he does next.

We have had this bad boy for a couple of months and it is more than worth the $9.99. The best films on this set are MALIBU EXPRESS and GUNS, unfortunately Sidaris’s best film SEVEN isn’t on here.

We haven’t checked this one out yet but the trailer is awesome and I have read some good reviews. We will let you know how this turns out.

A forgotten Walter Hill classic that packs a mean punch. I have this one on VHS, can’t wait to get this on Blu.

Kind of a mixed bag, but not bad by any stretch.
